GOP President
Candidate Duncan Hunter |
GLENN: Now, Duncan
Hunter, tell me, how many miles, Stu, did he just say that
he had built? That's incredible.
STU: 120?
GLENN: 120 miles built. Last I heard it was 12. Duncan
Hunter?
HUNTER: I'm sorry, yeah.
GLENN: Sorry. I don't know what happened technically. Give
me your line again, that he has the wrong amount of fence.
HUNTER: Well, when Mr. Chertoff says he has built 120 miles
of fence, he's taking credit for the fence that I built back
in the 1990s. Officially, and I've got the official
documents for how much they built of the 854 miles of fence
that my bill mandated that the President sign last October,
they've only built 17.9 miles of that fence, of the 854.
GLENN: Unbelievable.
HUNTER: Up through the last of August. They just sent us a
new report that said they are actually up to 30 miles. They
are not up to 120 miles and Mr. Chertoff's taking credit for
fence that I built during the Clinton administration.
GLENN: Okay, real quick. The money, it was put into the
bill, right?
HUNTER: There's $800 million cash on hand at the Department
of Homeland Security available for the fence. Now, Mr.
Chertoff says, well, I've got permission to use that for
other things. That's true, but he hasn't been using it for
other things, and he has a law that mandates that he
construct a border fence and that he complete the Arizona
sector, which is 392 miles, by May 30th of 2008. And unless
he gets started full board right now with multiple
contracts, he will never make that deadline.
GLENN: What are the penalties? Any penalties for not
completing this? Did you get any teeth in this?
HUNTER: There's no penalty except being voted out of office.
But the other penalty we have is this, Glenn. We have an
open border through which people are streaming. You've
already had 120 people die in the Arizona sun of heat stroke
and dehydration. If we had a double fence there, those
people, all illegal aliens, would not have died out there.
So if this is a humanitarian thing, if there's any way to
appeal to Mr. Chertoff just to do his job, just to bring in
contractors, give them contracts, give them each a section
of the fence and have them start working.
GLENN: Duncan Hunter, running for President of the United
States. Thank you, sir.
HUNTER: Many thanks. I'll send those documents to you.
GLENN: Please do. Please do. We'll get a response from him.
HUNTER: Bye-bye.
